After two developer-only testing Builds, the final development milestone of Silverlight 4 was made available for download the past week. Now, end users around the world can start taking advantage of the evolution of Silverlight, with developers finally being able to leverage the technology, an aspect that wasn’t possible with the Beta and Release Candidate builds in the absence of a go-live license. Microsoft is even working to ensure that devs have all they need in order to kick off Silverlight projects. In this regard, the documentation accompanying Silverlight 4 has been updated in line with the RTW (release to web) milestone.

“The Silverlight 4 Training Course includes a whitepaper explaining all of the new Silverlight 4 features, several hands-on-labs that explain the features, and an 8 unit course for building business applications with Silverlight 4. The business applications course includes 8 modules with extensive hands on labs as well as 25 accompanying videos that walk you through key aspects of building a business application with Silverlight. Key aspects in this course are working with numerous sandboxed and elevated out of browser features, the new RichTextBox control, implicit styling, webcam, drag and drop, multi touch, validation, authentication, MEF, WCF RIA Services, right mouse click, and much more,” Microsoft stated.

Silverlight 4 Build 4.0.50401.0 is available for download as of April 15th, 2010. The software giant did promise that the technology would be offered to end users a few days after the RTM of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4, and it delivered. Devs and early adopters already familiar with the evolution of Silverlight 4 know that the Training Course has already been offered through the Microsoft Download Center.

However, the April 16th, 2010 release is obviously following the RTW Build, Silverlight 4 4.0.50401.0, to market. “This Developer Training Kit includes Hands-on-Lab (HOL) documentation and sample projects. The kit is a companion package for an online course. Please refer to the resource links below in order to access the course. Additional resources are provided online including demonstration videos,” the company added.
