Customers that deploy the latest upgrade for Office 2007 but have a change of heart and wish to remove it can leverage the Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite.

The Service Pack Uninstall Tool for Office 2007 has been available for a few years now, and it was initially designed to enable users to remove Office 2007 SP2.

While the Microsoft Download Center page for the utility has remained virtually unchanged in terms of the information it provides since 2009, fact is that the tool is perfectly capable of uninstalling the recently released Office 2007 SP3.

The software giant did update the Knowledge Base article for the tool a few days ago, on October 25, 2011, a date which coincides with the availability of Office 2007 SP3. The refresh is by no means a coincidence.

“Traditionally, you cannot uninstall Microsoft Office service packs without completely uninstalling the Microsoft Office products,” the Redmond company reveals.

“The 2007 Microsoft Office suite Service Pack 2 (SP2) is the first service pack to support uninstalling the updates for the 2007 Office desktop products. The Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office suite (Oarpman.exe) lets you uninstall all the updates for the 2007 Office desktop products that are included in the 2007 Office suite SP2 and SP3.”

Office 2007 SP3 can be downloaded from Microsoft and installed manually as of the start of this week.

Customers unhappy with the upgrade can go back to Office 2007 SP2 by using the Microsoft Service Pack Uninstall Tool for the 2007 Microsoft Office Suite.

It’s important to note that the utility is essentially a command line tool, but the software giant offered some guidance as to how it can be used:

“You can use this tool to streamline the removal of all the SP2 or SP3 client updates. However, you may want to uninstall the SP2 or SP3 client updates individually. To do this, use the following command:

‘msiexec /i {MSI GUID} MSIPATCHREMOVE={Patch GUID} /l*vx Path of the log file’.”
