Norton, the company behind the highly-acclaimed security software, has just announced the release of a free security application for Android-powered smartphones.

Dubbed Norton Mobile Security Lite, the application offers users anti-theft protection with powerful anti-malware features.

The premium version of the application offers Web protection and provides a privacy guard that helps users protect their personal information by blocking fraudulent and phishing websites, especially created to obtain personal information that could be used to steal identities.

Those who wish additional protection and peace of mind can use the application to block calls, numbers, and text messages, just like a standard anti-spam software.

Norton Mobile Security Lite protects confidential information and offers basic mobile protection from the most trusted name in security – which means your device is safeguarded and you're worry-free,” said Dave Cole, vice president mobile products, Norton.

According to Norton, the application is initially available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish, but more languages will be added soon.

However, Android users who want additional protections such as the ability to remotely locate or wipe their device, block unwanted calls or text messages, or block phishing websites, there is the option to upgrade to the full featured Norton Mobile Security for an annual subscription price of $29.99.

The free security software offers the following features:

Anti-theft – Remotely lock your lost or stolen device via SMS text and prevent strangers from seeing your private information or running up your mobile bill;
Anti-malware – Scans all files and app updates downloaded to the mobile device and automatically detects and removes threats without slowing you down.

Norton Mobile Security Lite is now available as a free download from Android Market and is compatible with all devices running Android 1.6 or higher.
