Sony has just released the new 1.5.1 firmware version for its latest console, the PlayStation 4. This update improves system stability and adds minor refinements to elements of the system UI, such as clearly indicating when a user downloads a game and a game patch at the same time.

The update will come OTA soon, but for those of you who plan on enjoying a game later today, here's how to perform the update now.

First of all, the update methods are either using the Internet (which is unavailable for now), a disk or a computer.

If you choose to use a disk, you'll have to burn the firmware file to the root folder and then insert it to the console. Follow the on-screen steps and you can't get it wrong.

For those of you who do not have a disk at hand, updating via computer requires a USB flash drive. Download the firmware file and copy it to the USB stick in a folder named “UPDATE” that's created in another folder named “PS4.” The address should look like “X:\PS4\UPDATE\PS4UPDATE.PUP,” where “X:” is your removable storage drive letter.

Turn off the power of your PS4 system completely. Check that the power indicator is not lit. If the power indicator is lit up in orange, touch the power button on the PS4 system for at least 7 seconds (until the system beeps a second time).

Now, connect the USB storage device and then touch the power button for at least 7 seconds. The PS4 starts in safe mode.

Select [Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)] and follow the on-screen guide to complete.

If you are keen on updating your PS4 now, download the Sony PlayStation 4 Firmware 1.51 according to the region marked on the device, install it and stay “updated one minute ago.”
