Firefox 9 has been officially released. The latest update to the popular browser brings several new features and improvements, the biggest of which is a modification to the JavaScript engine that provides a big performance boost of up to 30 percent in some cases.

The latest Firefox uses type inference, a method of determining and setting the type of a JavaScript variable at runtime which leads to less overhead and more efficiently used memory. A more comprehensive explanation as well as some benchmark results are available here.

Mac OS X Lion users get better theme integration and support for two-finger swipe. Firefox 9 also comes with plenty of improvements under the hood including better support for web technologies such as HTML5, MathML and CSS.

Firefox 9 is now available for download on all supported platforms, Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Android. Current Firefox 8 users will be getting the update in the days to come, as it rolls out gradually.

If you can't wait, you can grab it from the download links above.

I'm still stuck on my Firefox 3.6.10 because I think my 7-year old PC can't handle the latest browsers of Mozilla... hope this'll change soon but I'm quite satisfied with 3.6.10...

In all honesty I'm not seeing much increase in speed.

Just when you get the browser and add-ons working the way you want them to, here comes another UPDATE to disrupt things. The compatibility issues with extensions that always follow a firefox update are a pain in the ".....!"(neck). Perhaps Mozilla would do well to realize that
the availability of extensions is one of the main reasons that their browser became so popular. The overly ambitious update schedule is undoubtedly turning off many FF users.
How about a choice of critical security updates to be done immediately and browser updates
that allow some discretionary choice about when you go through the update ordeal.
