Apple subsidiary FileMaker Inc. has released an updated version of its business software, FileMaker Pro 13.0.2.228, which includes new features, enhancements to existing tools, and a range of bug fixes. The update is free for all existing users of the software.

A tool for creating custom solutions to manage business information on iPad, iPhone, Windows, Mac and the web, FileMaker Pro is used by millions of customers to streamline actions like manage contacts, track inventory, organize projects and more.

Version 13.0.2.228 is now being offered featuring a "Preserve external container storage" option to skip re-importing external container storage. Instead, the program now reuses existing external contents during records import between databases created in FileMaker.

The functionality of the FMP URL protocol has been extended to include the following actions:

"Open Clients.fmp12 from the user’s Documents folder and run the ListClients script. fmp://~/Clients.fmp12?script=ListClients"

"Run the ListClients script from an open file named Clients.fmp12 fmp://$/Clients.fmp12?script=ListClients"

For Windows 7 users, the update addresses an issue that may occur during application launch and in dialog boxes.

Calculations and scripting is improved (mainly through bug fixes). For example, an issue where COUNT ( DISTINCT ... ) used with the ExecuteSQL function could return an incorrect result is now addressed. An issue where the Insert From URL script step could return an incorrect result is also fixed.

Some layout rendering improvements are included. FileMaker says it has patched an issue where, "when switching or re-importing a theme and the source and destination themes both contain custom styles with the same display name, the custom style assignment would have been lost after the theme switch or re-import."

For OS X customers in particular, the update addresses an issue where some fonts displayed incorrectly in charts, and an issue where data entry could appear slower.

Any text editing issues where characters from condensed and expanded fonts were not being placed in their correct locations are gone now, and an issue with copying and pasting from Excel 2011 into FileMaker Pro is also addressed.

The Apple-subsidiary further removed the 2048 character limit from the XML import text fields, and there could still be a known issue left unaddressed, going by the release notes: "the supported ESS data sources are listed incorrectly in FileMaker 13 ODBC and JDBC Guide and FileMaker Pro 13 Help."

Newcomers can test the software for free for a period of 30 days.
