Mozilla is making more and more progress with the development of its Firefox browser for mobile devices, called Fennec, and now the fourth beta release of the Maemo flavor of the software solution is available for download. Still aimed only at those willing to test the application, the new variant comes around with a wide range of improvements, including added support for the recently introduced Nokia N900.

According to the guys over at Mozilla, “this release is available for the Maemo OS2008 and Maemo 5 software platforms running on the Nokia N810 and N900 Internet Tablets.” However, you might already know that you can still try out the software even if you do not own a Maemo-based handset, as desktop variants of the browser are also available, and you can install them either on Windows, Linux or Mac computers.

A quick look at the changes that Fennec 1.0 Beta 4 for Maemo comes around with shows: - Build now works on the N900 - Streamlined bookmarking, editing, and management - Install and manage search engines - Improved touch-friendly theme - Improved panning and zooming performance - Support for add-on options in the Add-ons Manager - Integration with Maemo5 system UI controls - Notification of tabs opened in the background - Bookmark list now displays the URL and tags associated with a bookmark

Other improvements to the web browser include the addition of search providers from the site identity panel or the simplification of the Download Manager (removed searching and find file on disk). At the same time, a product information page has been added into the equation, as well as support for updating add-ons and for the HandheldFriendly meta-tag. Fennec 1.0 Beta 4 for Maemo also comes around with a series of other bug fixes and enhancements, with a great focus on user experience and UI polish.
