Photos, voice messages, and text are now front and center, stickers get shortcuts

Facebook has updated its messaging client to version 5.1 boasting the exact same changes from the 5.0 build deployed last month. It isn’t clear what the purpose of the update is.

Version 5.1 reportedly comes with more ways to message people (with everything available “front and center,” as Facebook puts it), the ability to send videos from your phone's camera roll and to play incoming videos right in the app, instant photo sharing (without leaving the convo), sticker shortcuts, and improved search.

Nothing wrong with the update except it’s identical to the one before it. While some customers endlessly complain about certain features, Facebook appears to be doing nothing to alleviate these woes. Hopefully it’s just a mixup with the release notes and Facebook Messenger 5.1 actually contains some much-deserved fixes.

For what it’s worth, you can download Facebook Messenger 5.1 right now on your iDevice and give it a try to see how it fares. Localized in dozens of different languages (including Bokmål, Norwegian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, and Polish), the IM client requires iOS 6.0 and works with most iDevices currently in circulation today, starting with iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, and iPod touch fourth-generation.
