Not yet available officially

Users of Windows 7 have a new theme available for download, specifically tailored for the latest iteration of the Windows client. According to Christian Kirchesch, from Microsoft Germany, the theme has been produced by Microsoft and Ferrari, but it has yet to be released officially. However, this minor detail can be ignored completely, as the Ferrari Windows 7 desktop theme is indeed available for download, via Windows Live SkyDrive and courtesy of Kirchesch. Just download and double click to install.

“Here is a small consolation for all fans of Ferrari, who are disappointed with Michael Schumachers aborted comeback in F1: A brand new Windows 7 desktop theme, developed exclusively by Ferrari and Microsoft in Italy. This theme is not yet officially released in Italy and is available here for the first time to download! A lot of fun,” revealed Microsoft's Rob Margel. “There are some fantastic Ferrari pictures, however if you get annoyed by the sounds, as i did, then you can change them.”

With the advent of Windows 7, Microsoft has changed the approach to personalizing the operating system. The platform no longer brings to the table the bells and whistles of Ultimate Extras, such as DreamScene and animated backgrounds, but introduces themes instead.

“A theme is a combination of pictures, colors, and sounds on your computer. It includes a desktop background, a screen saver, a window border color, and a sound scheme. Some themes might also include desktop icons and mouse pointers. Windows comes with several themes. You can choose an Aero theme to personalize your computer, the Windows 7 Basic theme if your computer is performing slowly, or a High Contrast theme to make the items on your screen easier to see,” Microsoft informed.

On top of the default themes that ship with the operating system, users also have the possibility of accessing additional content, completely for free from Microsoft. The Redmond company has set up a web destination designed to help with the personalization of Windows 7. Users are of course free to choose their own pictures, colors, and sounds to modify existing themes or create customized content.
