ClamXav, the free virus scanner from developer Mark Allan, has been updated to version 2.2.2 with the purpose of implementing a new ClamAV engine, improving window placement on OS X Lion machines, adding new language support, and more.

In addition to updating the ClamAV engine to 0.97.2, Allan notes that the new version of ClamXav fixes several issues with the antivirus software, including one where virus definition files have wrong permissions after a defs update, and one where window placement was acting up on OS X 10.7 Lion.

The developer also fixed a Spanish translation error in the scheduling preference pane and added further languages to the localization of ClamXav, including Danish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

However, users should note that the new language support is only present in the Mac App Store version of ClamXav. There are numerous differences between the build Allan distributes on the web, and the one hosted on Apple’s servers, all of which are listed below:

· The App Store version doesn't contain ClamXav Sentry, so it is not able to watch your computer for new files and scan them as they arrive. · There is no engine installation phase as the App Store requirements stipulate that everything must be self-contained within the app. · Virus definition updates are downloaded on a per-user basis. · Updates to the ClamXav app itself are taken care of via the Mac App Store. · Mac OS X 10.6 or greater is required.

ClamXav 2.2.2 also features an updated engine remover for LaunchAgents. Allan notes that if you have edited freshclam.conf and clamd.conf by hand, you can find your old files inside /tmp.

“If you don't know what that last line means, you can probably ignore it!”, he says. Allan offers ClamXav for free, but donations are appreciated.

“All donations (no matter how small) are gratefully received and would be a huge incentive to help me work on future versions of ClamXav, but more importantly I rely on donations to pay for my bandwidth costs. Please consider it,” he says.

Users should also note that they do not need to access the Mac App Store if they want that particular version of ClamXav. The exact same version that can be found on the Mac App Store can also be downloaded here.

Finally, since ClamXav has the ability to move files on your computer, it is highly recommended that you back up any important data before running a scan with the software.
