The development team behind Google Chrome is proud to release a new version of its open-source web browser through the Dev Channel.

“The Chrome Dev channel has been updated to 10.0.642.2 for all platforms,” blogs Jason Kersey, of the Google Chrome development team.

“Here’s what’s new,” he adds, and proceeds to dish out the changes.

Currently at version 10.0.642.2, Mac, Windows and Linux builds of Chrome Dev are getting many polish changes and fixes for the new tabbed preferences dialog, in addition to the updated V8 engine - now at version 3.0.7.0.

Also spanning all versions of Chrome, several tweaks have been made to Instant, while about:sync is now integrated with the new tabbed preference dialog.

The release further adds “Save” and “Print” to the context menu of PDFs in frames and fixes a crash on some Linux distributions when accessing GNOME Keyring.

Chrome 10.0.642.2 has quite a few code alterations that particularly target the Mac OS X version of the browser.

For once, this Dev update makes thumbnails closable in tab overview mode.

Finally, a trio of bug fixes specifically aimed at Chrome for Mac is documented in Kersey’s post.

- Fix color of favicon and tab overview thumbnails - Fix crash in translation code - Fix unable to re-open extension popups that were closed by clicking the browser action button

As usual, full details about this Chrome release are available in the SVN revision log, while those who stumble upon new issues are encouraged to file a bug report.

Google Chrome requires Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and an Intel-based Mac.

A note about Google Chrome release channels and updates

Chrome boasts a release system with three distinct channels: Stable, Beta, and Developer preview, called the "Dev" channel.

The Stable channel is updated with features and fixes only after they are thoroughly tested in the Beta channel, while the Beta channel is being updated with stable and complete features from the Dev channel, where ideas get tested.
