The update also resolves some USB and chipset compatibility issues

Owners of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops will be glad to hear that an answer to their recent problems has been made available for public download.

Apple received complaints about the CPU consuming too much power when under load. The issue was particularly strange in that battery energy was being lost even with the charger plugged in.

Another matter was that various USB 3.0 drive enclosures didn't work at full speeds. While USB 2.0 operation was flawless, some controller chips (low-end ones) didn't get along with the MacBooks as they were supposed to.

Apple didn't outright say the update solves these problems, but reports from those who installed the package imply it does.

The MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update is designed to fix an issue that can lead to increased CPU power consumption. MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Update also improves compatibility with some USB devices. This update is recommended for all Mac notebooks introduced since June 2012.”
