Following up on their previous announcement that CCleaner was coming to the Mac, Piriform Ltd. is now happy to announce that a beta of their free cleaning utility can be downloaded and installed on Macintosh computers.

“We're pleased to announce that CCleaner for Mac has been released as a public beta version,” reads the developers’ announcement.

“We're working on more features and anticipate new releases every few weeks, with a final version out in a month or two,” the folks at Piriform write on their blog.

Only “advanced” users are encouraged to test the app, as it’s still in beta, according to the developers.

It’s compatible with Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard, as well as with all current versions of Firefox and Safari.

CCleaner is a popular cleaning utility that, up until now, has been available solely for the Windows user base.

A system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool, CCleaner removes unused files from your Mac, allowing it to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space.

In addition to leaning clutter, it also cleans traces of the user’s online activities such as the web browsing history.

A fully featured registry cleaner is also available within the app, but as avid Apple fans should know, this function will not be exercised on Mac OS X.

The best part, according to Piriform, is that it’s fast and that it contains no Spyware or Adware.

Well, knowing how long CleanMyMac takes to get the job done, it’s a welcome new addition to my Mac OS X utilities, but I’ll have to test it for a while to confirm Piriform’s claims. Surely there’s some compromise here for such a rapid cleaning session.

It is worth noting that CCleaner is Microsoft-certified, meaning it’s most likely going to accolades on the Mac as well. Again, please note that CCleaner is currently in beta on Mac OS.
