Windows NT Backup is a utility designed to enable users to restore backups made on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 in Windows Vista and Windows Server Codename Longhorn. The name of the utility reveals the fact that its functionality is limited to restoring backups that have been created with the Windows NT Backup application.

"This download is a utility that runs on Windows Vista and Windows Server Codename "Longhorn" to restore older backups made using the "Windows NT Backup" application on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Windows NT Backup has been replaced in Windows Vista or Windows Server Codename "Longhorn" with different applications, which are not compatible with the .bkf files that NT Backup created," revealed Microsoft.

The Windows NT Backup delivers compatibility for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, and works with all the editions of the operating system. Microsoft advises users to enable or deploy the Removable Storage Management feature prior to installing Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility. Failing to do so will result in an NTSMAPI.dll error.

In Windows Vista you will have to make your way to the Control Panel, Programs and then access Turn Windows Features on or off. You need to do so with administrator privileges and then check the box featured next to Removable Storage Management.

In Windows Server Codename Longhorn access Control Panel and then Administrative Tools, Server Manager, and in the Features Summary select Add features. As was the case with Vista, you will need to check the box next to Removable Storage Manager. Clicking next and then Install will deploy the feature.

"You can use this utility if you made a backup using an older version of Windows, and now want to restore files from that backup on to a computer running Windows Vista or Windows Server Codename Longhorn," added Microsoft.

Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility 1.0 was tested by Softpedia as being 100% Clean and is available for download here.
