Apple has rolled out a new version of its Apple TV software, delivering mostly bug fixes addressing issues with audio and video playback, output settings, movie descriptions, as well as Live FF/RW.

Running an iOS variant of its own, the second-generation Apple TV currently features iOS 4.2.2, the first incremental update since Apple last updated the set-top box in March.

A summary of the features included in Apple TV Software Update 4.2.2 is provided, as usual, through technical documentation posted to Apple’s Support section on Apple.com.

The release reportedly addresses an issue in which audio is not output when playing some video content, and adds an audio output setting for switching to 16-bit audio for compatibility with some TVs and AV receivers.

On the video front, the update addresses an issue in which video is not displayed when playing some content. addresses an issue in which the description information is not displayed for some movies, and fixes a bug which caused YouTube subscription videos to be inappropriately ordered.

Finally, Apple carried out some Live FF/RW improvements as well - “Improves the performance of fast-forwarding and rewinding live events,” reads the official wording over at Apple Support.

To update the Apple TV to the current software version, users must select Settings > General (using their Apple Remote), and click Update Software.

The device will check to see if an update is available, at which point it will detect iOS 4.2.2.

A download message should appear with an option to click Download and Install to start the update process.

Users must not, under any circumstances, disconnect their Apple TV during the update process.

During the update process, the Apple TV may restart, then display one or two Apple logos and status bars, depending on which model the person has.

For example, first-gen Apple TVs will play the opening video and return to the main menu, after the final reboot.
