With backwards compatibility as one of the key goals when it comes down to building Windows 7, Microsoft is not only ensuring that applications are supported at operating system level, but also that it provides customers with virtualization solutions designed to handle any exception. In this context, the Redmond company has made available for download App-V 4.5 CU1 with support for Windows 7 Beta Build 7000. The Cumulative Update 1 is designed to make Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) 4.5 play nice with the next iteration of the Windows operating system.

“Our MDOP customers have told us that they want to see Windows 7 Support for Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) so that they can move ahead with their application testing for enterprise deployments of Windows 7 early on. We heard you loud and clear. We are announcing the availability of App-V 4.5 CU1 with support for the Windows 7 Beta,” revealed Brandon LeBlanc, Windows communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team. “All subscribers of the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) can head on over to Microsoft Connect and register to download the update. This release will have access to the new technology for free as part of their current licenses.”

Microsoft explained that the update of App-V specific to Windows 7 is designed to complement the high level of application compatibility planned between Windows Vista and its successor. In this context, App-V is set up to enable customers to run a select collection of applications that are inexorably tailored to a specific Windows release.

“Through MDOP, our goal is to continuously offer technology and updates to our enterprise customers. When Windows 7 releases, we are committed to supporting the final product within 90 days of general availability. App-V 4.5 CU1 also contains a small number of improvements such as instant access or removal of applications assigned to end users,” explained a member of the MDOP team.
