As Mac users wait for the official release of Snow Leopard, the latest version of Mac OS X, Apple is updating its professional photography piece of software, Aperture, with improved general compatibility and overall stability. The update is available for free to existing Aperture users.

According to the Mac maker, the Aperture 2.1.4 update addresses the general compatibility and overall stability in areas like creating books, ordering books and prints and slideshows. “The update is recommended for all users of Aperture 2,” in keeping with the company behind the Mac operating system.

On a more detailed note (Support piece), Apple explains that Aperture 2.1.4 delivers improvements in key areas like Import, MobileMe support and Books. The update “addresses an issue from Aperture 2.1.3 that prevented the ‘Do not import duplicates’ option in the import window to properly detect and filter out duplicate photos,” Apple explains.

For owners of a MobileMe account, the update also “addresses an issue that caused JPEG images to be compressed when uploading photos to MobileMe, even when the ‘Actual Size Images’ option was selected.” Lastly, Aperture 2.1.4 “addresses an issue that could cause dust jackets to render incorrectly when switching between the softcover and hardcover options with the Stock Book theme,” the technote reveals.

Aperture is designed to assist professional photographers in the post-production work. The piece of software is optimized for speed, using a powerful search engine and the Quick Preview mode for rapid-fire photo browsing.

Thanks to these two elements that make up Aperture, even users working with large libraries will be able to get the best results, Apple claims. Employing an expanded suite of adjustment tools including Recovery, Vibrancy, Vignette, and a soft-edged Retouch brush – all with the highest quality RAW processing – professionals and casual users alike can enhance their photos with ease.
