Angry Birds Rio, the latest version of Rovio’s popular puzzle platformer, is now available for Mac OS X as a five dollar download through Apple’s Mac App Store on machines running OS X 10.6.6 or newer.

According to the plot dished out by Rovio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to Rio de Janeiro where they are tasked with helping out other birds – two rare macaws going by the name of Blu and Jewel.

The two birds are actually the stars of the upcoming Fox motion picture, Rio, according to Rovio.

The developers say they have “paired the physics-based gameplay of the original game with unique twists based on the film.”

The game comes with a total of 60 levels spanning two episodes, one of which needs to be unlocked by completing the first 30 levels.

In the Episodes view, four empty slots indicate that at least four more updates are to arrive from Rovio this year, for all versions of Angry Birds Rio (iOS, Mac OS X, Windows).

In fact, they confirmed it themselves yesterday, saying “Expect plenty more where this came from: Episodic updates throughout 2011!”

In addition to the new levels, there are also completely new achievements to be had, special hidden fruits that players need to discover, as well as a boss fight.

The release notes are reproduced below: Angry Birds Rio features: - Two fantastic episodes with 60 exciting levels! - Completely new achievements! - Special Hidden fruits - discover them all! - Put your Angry Birds skills to the ultimate test in a spectacular boss fight!

As noted above, downloading Angry Birds Rio on your Mac requires at least Mac OS X 10.6.6 (Snow Leopard), as the game is exclusively downloadable through Apple’s Mac App Store.
