Adobe has released a major new version of its Lightroom photography software for all supported platforms, including Mac OS X. Lightroom 4.0 is out of beta, packing tons of new features and enhancements.

Available as a $79 upgrade to all users, the new version adds basic video editing and playing, a new auto-fix function based on content, enhanced adjustment brushes, book creation tools, and integrated maps that support GPS data.

Winston Hendrickson, vice president of Digital Imaging Products for Adobe, said "Feedback from our customers is invaluable in developing Lightroom and the real trick to a great release is to combine these insights with Adobe's unrivalled image processing innovation."

"Lightroom 4 is a stunning new release that will enhance photography workflows and help photographs stand out from the crowd."

Reverse geocoding is now available in the Map Module. Auto tone in Develop has been revamped and improved based on new controls. The range of local white balance controls (temperature and tint) has been increased, and the maximum Blurb book size is now 240 pages.

Also new since the end of the beta are the updated Develop presets (plus added new presets for video).

According to the Flash makers, over 800 bugs have been found and fixed, all thanks to an immense pool of Lightroom 4 beta testers.

Adobe also includes a few important notes with the 4.0 release, which you can skim through in the full change log right here.

Adobe Lightroom 4.0 for Mac OS X requires an Intel-based 64-bit processor, 2GB of RAM, at least 1GB of available hard-disk space, 1,024x768 screen resolution, an internet connection required web-based services, and Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) or later.
