Version 9.0 of the AVG security solutions is now available for download, tailored to the latest iteration of the Windows client, weeks before Windows 7 will become generally available on October 22nd, 2009. As of October 5th, customers can buy AVG Internet Security 9.0, AVG Anti-Virus & Firewall 9.0 and AVG Anti-Virus 9.0. All the latest releases of security products from AVG have been tailored to Windows 7, both the 32-bit and the 64-bit flavors of the operating system, according to the antivirus maker. This is of course no surprise, since AVG was among the first companies to offer support for the successor of Windows Vista, ever since early January 2009, when Windows 7 debuted into Beta, Build 7000.

The security outfit is promising a revamped user experience, simplified usage, higher performance and enhanced protection with AVG version 9.0. As far as performance is concerned, the solutions from the AVG version 9.0 product lineup are now capable of marking safe and unsafe files on a customer machine on the first checks and skip files labeled as safe in subsequent scans. As a direct result scan performance increases, while scanning times drop by as much as 50%, AVG notes. The security company indicates that reduced scan times are accompanied by boosted boot times and memory usage by 10% to 15%.

The promise is that, because of the variety of security technologies leveraged, customers will be kept safe. AVG 9.0 real time protection involves the now traditional signature-based protection but also heuristics, behavioral, in-the-cloud, and white listing technologies.

“AVG 9.0 will provide home computer users with a more powerful and more streamlined solution that adds protection without impacting user experience, taking us back to our core strength of low impact, high performance security,” explained J.R. Smith, CEO, AVG Technologies. “We’ve always believed that everyone has the right to a safe online experience. With AVG 9.0, we are providing first-class assistance to our users in their development of tools and measures for their safety from all of the threats posed by cybercriminals and identity thieves, whether they’re working, playing, banking or shopping on the web.”

In addition to the anti-phishing protection offered through LinkScanner against websites hunting for customers’ sensitive data, AVG has set up AVG Identity Theft Recovery Unit (ITRU) to offer customers additional protection against identity theft. Designed as a free service, ITRU will provide support to users affected by identity theft. “Our addition of the identity theft protection and support services is game changing for the security space, as no other vendor is addressing this critical issue with an offering to its customers, free of charge. This is further evidence of AVG’s unparalleled commitment to its customers,” added Smith.
