Scientific Linux, a recompiled Red Hat Enterprise Linux put together by various labs and universities around the world, has reached version 5.8 RC2.

Scientific Linux 5.8 RC2 should be installed from scratch because, most likely, a "yum" upgrade to this version will not work.

A number of updated packages made it into this second Release Candidate version, such as a new Linux kernel, version 2.6.18, an updated Anaconda installer, the gpgcheck lines have been modified, yum-autoupdate now supports PRERUN and POSTRUN, and config file was changed to include the "Last" option.

A comprehensive changelog can be found in the official announcement. Download Scientific Linux 5.8 RC2 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a development release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only.
