TDK has already proven that optical discs can be "persuaded" to store 100GB of data, using a four layer Blu-Ray disc. Sharp goes beyond that limit and announces a new innovation.

The company has succeeded to devise a disc that uses
an original structure, called "super resolution", which will permit the reduction of the number of points inside the disc's structure.

Using this technology, Sharp has succeeded to produce a blue laser compatible disc, which uses a double layer to store up to 100GB of high-definition video content.

It is not unknown for now whether this solution will be applied in the future to Blu-Ray or HD-DVD discs, but the cost of the technology will be the decisive factor between adopting the new structure and abandoning it.
