Video game developer Double Fine and the Indie Fund are announcing that Spacebase DF-9, which is at the moment offered via the Early Access service from Steam, has managed to recuperate its initial development costs in two weeks.

The game was created for 400,000 dollars (305,000 Euro) and was initially part of a game jam at the developer before the Indie Fund offered the resources required to deliver it to players.

Spacebase DF-9 was offered on Early Access starting on October 15 and 85 percent of the revenue it generated was linked to the service while the rest came from direct sales.

Gamasutra quotes an official announcement from the Indie Fund as saying that, “This is an important milestone for us because the success of this experiment opens the door for us to support more projects of this magnitude in the future.”

It will be interesting to see whether more teams choose to create medium-sized projects with resources from third-party investors rather than choosing to appeal to crowdfunding.
