The newest game coming from Double Fine Productions, the studio of famous games designer Tim Schafer and, more recently, Ron Gilbert, has just been announced in the form of Trenched.

Double Fine has been striking gold since it focused on releasing lightweight downloadable games, with its two previous games, Costume Quest and Stacking, selling extremely well on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, respectively.

Now, after announcing a new game based on the hit Sesame Street TV series, called Once Upon a Monster, the company has presented a new project.

The next game from Double Fine is called Trenched and is quite interesting, to say the least.

The title announced at the Games Developer Conference last week, is described as being "extremely, extremely manly."

From the first video presented by Double Fine, it seems to be a third-person sci-fi war shooter, in which gamers controls mechanized platforms in a pretty gritty conflict.

Players will be able to upgrade their robots, probably by winning battles and vanquishing enemies, getting them from basic skeletons to fully-armored platforms of destruction that will defeat anything in their wake.

Trenched is made by Double Fine and, unlike Costume Quest or Stacking, who were published by THQ, will be published by Microsoft Game Studios exclusively for the Xbox Live Arcade.

Once Upon a Monster, based on the Sesame Street TV series, is also going to be released by the company with the help of Microsoft Game Studios, as it's custom made for the Xbox 360's Kinect motion sensor.

No concrete date was revealed, but it's a safe bet that Trenched will be making its way onto the Xbox 360 later this year, possibly after the release of the Sesame Street game, scheduled for fall of 2011.

Until then, you can check out the video of Trenched released by Double Fine, as well as a batch of screenshots depicting gameplay from the arcade title.
