John Carmack, legendary developer from id Software known for games like Quake, Doom, and Rage, is not entirely convinced by SteamOS and Valve's ideas.

John Carmack was invited to speak, along with Tim Sweeney and Johan Andersson, at an Nvidia conference in Montreal. When asked about SteamOS and Steam Machines, he said it was a risky proposition.

“It still seems a little bit dicey to me, getting everything moved over to Linux. I'm pushing from than side of things, but given their track record I'm a little hesitant. If it would be some other random company I would be pseudo-scornful, but it's Valve, so I'm not,” said John Carmack during the Q&A.

id Software is one of the few companies that released part of their game assets as open source, most notable being the id Tech 4 engine which powered the Doom 3 game.
