Microsoft is reportedly getting ready to debut the second-generation Surface tablet, but at the same time, the company is also trying to expand market availability of the existing models.

The tech giant recently announced that nine more stores in the UK are getting the Surface RT and the Pro, while more retailers are likely to be announced soon.

Microsoft’s advice for those still waiting to get the Surface is as simple as it could be: don’t wait for our tablet, as there are plenty of other Windows 8 tablets on the market.

“The best advice I can give to partners who weren't successful with Surface is that there are more than 2,500 Windows 8 devices in the market today. The best way to be in with the best chance when – and if – we do decide to broaden the channel is: if you don't have one today, build a devices business on some of the amazing OEM Windows 8 tablets,” Microsoft UK's director for devices in small and medium enterprises Peter King told CRN in a short statement.

“Don't wait for Surface to be available, we'll make the right announcement at the right time and you'll be in the best place possible if you've built a device business on what's available today.”

Microsoft is said to be working on the second-generation Surface tablet which, in addition to updated RT and Pro model, is also expected to come with an 8-inch unit running the first major Windows 8 overhaul called Windows 8.1

The new operating system is specifically optimized for smaller units, so a Surface Mini would pretty much make sense. At the same time, the company is trying to compete with the likes of iPad mini and Nexus 7, so expect the new Surface tablet by the end of the year.
