This coming April 24, a bone fragment which used to be part and parcel of a dodo femur is to be auctioned off in London.

Seeing how these birds became extinct back in the 17th century due to their being intensely hunted by people, the bone fragment is expected to draw the attention of natural history enthusiasts who might wish to add it to their collection.

“As an icon of extinction, the dodo is second to none. From its appearance in Alice in Wonderland to the expression 'dead as dodo', the bird has cemented its place in our cultural heritage,”argues James Hyslop from auction house Christie's.

“It is a reminder of the effect humans have on the natural world, and presents a rare opportunity to engage with this now lost and most enigmatic bird,” he further added.

It is believed that the bone fragment will eventually sell for about $15,150 – $22,700 (€11,800 – €17,700), Times of India says.
