A Dodgers fan has died as result of a stabbing during the team's game against the Giants in San Francisco.

According to Dodgers spokesman Jared Kaufe, the victim was the son of a stadium security guard. Jonathan Denver was walking with his dad, Robert Preece, after his shift at Dodgers stadium.

ESPN reports that Denver's brother and two others were with him. The stabbing took place in the Giants' ballpark area on Wednesday night.

A verbal altercation started between the Denvers and a group of Giants fans, who had just left a nightclub.

The victim had attended the game, but left in the eighth inning. He was wearing Dodgers gear on the night of his death.

Police have suggested that he has been stabbed by 21-year-old Michael Montgomery, once the argument escalated.

"There is no rational explanation for this senseless act. [...] The pain that this has caused his family and friends is unimaginable," the Dodgers team reps say in a statement.

Montgomery's father claims that his son has also stabbed Denver after being attacked by him. He suggests that they will be pursuing a self-defense strategy.

"One of the suspects during the course of the interviews (with detectives) made incriminating statements that give us the indication that he will be the person booked for homicide," Police Chief Greg Suhr says.

Montgomery describes the Dodgers fan yelling "Giants suck" after noticing the Giants hat worn by the suspect's friend. Suhr adds that a second suspect might be charged in the killing.

"We're trying to figure out what we're going to do with the other suspect. [...] The investigation is still ongoing," he notes.

"It seems like the passion that exudes in some fans is really pointed in the wrong direction. [...] We have bigger purposes in life than just orange and black, or blue and white," comments Giants fan Brian Chew.
