Upon releasing the Server Admin Tools 10.5.6, Apple posted two support documents detailing the contents and the aim of the downloadable package. Available for free download, the Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 contain remote administration tools, documentation, and utilities that you can install on a computer other than your server.

According to Apple's Support section, Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 contain the following items.

Installers
“The Server Administration Software installer package contains tools for remote server administration,” Apple says. “These applications require Mac OS X version 10.5 or later. If you received this administration tools disc with an Xserve, the Apple Xserve Diagnostics software is also available for diagnosing certain Xserve hardware issues.”

Server Assistant
“Use the Server Assistant application to install or set up Mac OS X Server on a remote computer. Server Assistant is primarily used for the set up of Xserve systems without an attached display. Server Preferences and Server Status widget The Server Preferences application and Server Status widget are for remote administration and monitoring of your server when set up in either the standard or workgroup server configurations,” the document outlines.

Server Admin
“The Server Admin application is for remote administration of one or more servers,” the Mac maker reveals. “It can be used to manage file share points, configure service settings, monitor server activity, and provide detailed logging information for each of the running services.”

The Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 also contain a Server Monitor, a Workgroup Manager and a System Image Utility. Needless to point out, Server Monitor is for the remote monitoring and management of one or more Xserve systems, while Workgroup Manager is used to remotely manage users, groups, and computer accounts in advanced server deployments. Workgroup Manager is also used to set and manage preferences for Mac OS X users, according to Apple. Furthermore, the utility can be used to create and customize NetBoot and NetInstall images.

Lastly, Xgrid Admin, and QuickTime Broadcaster are included in the package. Using the Xgrid Admin app, administrators can remotely manage clusters and monitor the activity of controllers, agents, and the status of jobs on the grid. Used along with QuickTime Streaming Server, QuickTime Broadcaster can help produce “professional-quality live events,” Apple says. Users can capture, stream and transmit media all from the same app.

Additional documentation is also to be found in the Server Admin Tools 10.5.6 package. It includes onscreen help and a suite of orientation and administrative guides. A Getting Started guide (PDF) is available.
