The device was developed with Fujitsu

At this year's CEATEC, held in Japan, DoCoMo and Fujitsu displayed several, interesting to say the least, phone tech items. One of the devices was a mobile phone that could actually be broken in two parts, both of which could be used separately.

So, with this phone, you get to separate the screen from the keyboard, while you can also put the pieces together in either a standard flip-phone arrangement or in a X1 landscape variation. In fact, you can configure the two halves in all the ways you can imagine (personally, I have come up with about eight ways so far, five of which are unpractical), since the two pieces are held together by a magnet and communicate using Bluetooth technology.

For the time being, this device is in the “concept phone” phase, so we don't know whether we'll see the model on the market anytime soon. Either way, the advantages of having a device that can be split in two are numerous but, then again, some disadvantages also come with it.

With this phone, users will be able to make a call while they are reading their email or checking their schedule, because the display is touchscreen and features various functions. For example, when the display is horizontally attached, the operation part will display a character screen entry.

DoCoMo said that it was possible to use the display part as a music player, while the operation part is stored in a bag. Also, users would have the possibility of choosing between various combinations of display parts and operation parts. For instance, DoCoMo said, if a user is into running, s/he can use a wristband type of display instead of a normal one. Pretty handy, right?

This phone seems to be really cool, and I personally hope that it we’ll get to see it on the market soon. There is, though, one bothering me and that’s what happens when you lose one of the parts? I mean, okay, granted, you have more space thanks to the two separate parts but, at the same time, you also have another object you can lose just like that. Either way, the advantages of this phone are not easy to ignore, so let's hope we'll hear more about it.
