- Rhythmbox music player in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS |
|
During the Ubuntu Developer Summit for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) the developers discussed the possibility of returning the Rhythmbox music player as the default audio management app for Ubuntu.Jason Warner from Canonical wants to know user's opinion in this matter, so write here in a comment if you want Rhythmbox to replace Banshee in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have to admit that Rhythmbox is my favorite music player in Ubuntu and I've replaced Banshee with it in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). Banshee has a lot of problems if you ask me. From the fact that it depends on Mono, and continuing with the time it takes to start and its overall stability issues. Rhythmbox is light, it starts very fast, and it "just works". What do you think about Rhythmbox or Banshee? Which one should be the default music player in Ubuntu? Please post comments below! Update: Here's the final decision! The decision was taken based on the feedback received from users who posted on the Ubuntu mailing list and the comments posted here.Thank you all for participating!

| Comment #7 by: Gg on 10 Nov 2011, 02:05 UTC | reply to this comment | Yes, Rhythmbox is better, Banshee just stop when listening internet radio and it doesn't start over. I've replaced it in my Ubuntu too. |

| Comment #12 by: Max on 10 Nov 2011, 05:42 UTC | reply to this comment | Banshee is not that bad Rhythmbox is great but why not just stick with VLC which JUST WORKS compare to both of them... |
| Comment #12.1 by: Carl on 12 Nov 2011, 18:00 GMT | VLC contains proprietary codecs built in and as such can't and wont ever be made a default application in its default form. |
| Comment #13 by: tek.fu on 10 Nov 2011, 06:15 UTC | reply to this comment | 100% Rhythmbox
I've replaced Banshee with it in Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). |
| Comment #14 by: anonix on 10 Nov 2011, 06:43 UTC | reply to this comment | Banshee has more features and should remain the default music player in Ubuntu. |

| Comment #16 by: sheriff deen on 10 Nov 2011, 07:05 UTC | reply to this comment | Yes Rhythmbox is lighter and faster........ |
| Comment #17 by: Shiv Kumar on 10 Nov 2011, 08:18 UTC | reply to this comment | Personally I find Amarok (old one) most comfortable, however as Amarok is not part of Gnome / Unity ecosystem, it can perhaps never befome default player of Ubuntu 12.04. Among Rhythmbox and Banshee, I would prefer Rhythmbox because of its faster response and less issues of crashing |
| Comment #18 by: Adrian on 10 Nov 2011, 09:07 UTC | reply to this comment | Clementine player is by far the best player. It can play .pls, .m3u files. |
| Comment #19 by: David Raid on 10 Nov 2011, 10:11 UTC | reply to this comment | Personally, I always install the modified version of it called Rhythm-e. That improves the aged UI and adds the album cover view that all modern music players subscribe to. With those added to Rhythmbox, it's pretty much flawless. |
| Comment #20 by: mkdk on 10 Nov 2011, 10:18 UTC | reply to this comment | Rhythmbox just works my * ! It crashes when you shift input source from internet radio to files or CD's and vice versa. It has features fit for the last century compared to other players. I vote for Clementine it's the most stable Linux audioplayer I've ever tried |
| Comment #22 by: Alexz on 10 Nov 2011, 11:09 UTC | reply to this comment | Audacious is sufficient for listening to music but it would absolutely perfect if it had music stores integrated |
| Comment #24 by: MichaelB on 10 Nov 2011, 12:27 UTC | reply to this comment | I vote to get rid of both by default and let users choose which to install - who needs the bloat. And if vlc is installed, then I don't need either Banshee nor Rhythmbox. |
| Comment #25.1 by: Boots on 27 Feb 2012, 16:36 GMT | Rhythmbox or Banshee it doesn't matter. Both need a better equalizer. Most of the settings are very tinny and need more punch. This is why I continue to use Amarok. |
| Comment #27 by: OmarLoremIpsum on 10 Nov 2011, 17:36 UTC | reply to this comment | I want Rhythmbox of course! |
| Comment #30 by: Sam the Layman on 16 Nov 2011, 16:14 UTC | reply to this comment | Rhythmbox is completely useless. Banshee is not.
What, you may well ask, is the reason for such an extreme statement? I have one word for you: equalizer!
Banshee, like iTunes, has an equalizer. That means that you can adjust the sound "levels" to draw out the subtle color and texture of your music, regardless of what kinds of speakers its playing through. People can tell when it sounds too "flat," or if the lows are accented so as to make small speakers and headphones crackle.
A music player with an equalizer can deliver the listening experience that users have come to expect. This is because nearly everyone has used an iPod or iTunes, and so are used to the sound optimization of the equalizer, whether they know it or not.
Do not make the assumption that this won't matter to most people. Please! |
| Comment #31 by: mrG on 20 Nov 2011, 13:57 UTC | reply to this comment | there are many worrying aspects of this:
1) rhythmbox REGULARLY changes their API stranding add-ons, for example the pitch/speed changer that is essential for music practice and transcription
2) rhythmbox is highly unstable, on a collection of only 20,000 files I am unable to make it run for more than a few days without crashing or jamming, whereas Banshee is highly stable and on the same modest hardware will run unattended for MONTHS
3) as noted by others, an EQ is essential
4) also absolutely essential is the Now Playing feature of Banshee that replaces the screen saver with a track info display.
On the downside:
1) Banshee is coded in Mono, which makes creating plugins unnecessarily cumbersome; what is so wrong with an open API?
2) the random-number algorithm is useless
3) the DAAP support in Banshee does not allow collection sharing
4) Banshee only supports Last.FM and does not have an open API to other service plugins such as libre.fm
5) when banshee encounters a file it "can't" play, such as a text file, it halts with the useless plea for a plugin search; THERE ARE NO MORE PLUGINS so there is no need to launch the pointless search.
Clearly either program could and should be made feature-complete and become the standard, but I think it is an embarrassment to the Ubuntu community that something so basic as a stable mp3 player should be lacking in the kit; Apple figured it out, why can't we? Perhaps if we concentrated our talents on one of the two for a while, we could solve some of the more pressing stability and interface issues from which the OTHER project, because they are Open Source, could benefit directly? | |
