Do Not Install Halo 3 on the Xbox 360 Hard Drive

Bungie says so

One of the main elements included in the New Xbox Experience, which has just launched for all the users of the Xbox 360 gaming console from Microsoft, is the ability to install
parts of a game on the hard drive of the device, if you have one of the two models with an internal storage solution. The idea was to reduce load times for players and limit the disk access which leads some of the Xbox 360 consoles to sound like aircraft ready to take off.

Even if it sounds good, there's at least one game which you should not install on your hard drive. That title is Halo 3, the best selling first person shooter from Bungie, exclusive to the Microsoft platform. Engineer Mat Noguchi made a post on the Bungie forums, spotted by Joystiq, in which he basically said that the game could be loading significantly slower if a hard drive install was performed. The problem is that Halo 3 was created so that “if a HDD is present, we copy maps from the DVD to the utility partition on the HDD” so “even if Halo 3 is already installed on the HDD, it will still copy maps to the utility partition”, which could result in a lot of hard drive activity slowing down the console.

Noguchi says that a patch might be released to make the game use the hard drive better but it would mean a “significant undertaking to try and retroactively patch Halo 3”. In other words, Bungie is not ready to invest the manpower and resources needed to do it. It seems that Halo 3: Recon could also have the same issue and will not be installed on the hard drive of the Xbox 360.

The expansion for Halo 3, which is supposed to arrive in 2009, will offer players a fresh perspective on the universe of the franchise.

Wow, get your facts straight.

First off, the hard drive is EXTERNAL.
Second, you don't install parts of the game to to the hard drive, you install the whole game.

The hard drive is clearly 'internal', an external hard drive is usually connected by usb or similar type of cable, whereas the Xbox one is more or less part of the console and is powered by it. Secondly no one says that you only install parts of games. What the article DOES say is that installed or not, Halo 3 insists on copying parts of itself to the hard drive. This means that if it's stored on the hard drive (as opposed to the game dvd) then the hard drive is having to work a lot harder copying that data, thus slowing your loading time.

Basically, I think download it anyway. If it keeps the disc clean and shuts up the Xbox, why not? Slower loading times? GET OVER IT.

Hey guys don't be selfish do not under any circumstance install Halo3 to your hard drive because not only does it makes your hard drive work slower (which will result in an early death for your HDD due to it working harder) But it slows the game down if your playing online matches for everyone who plays against you. Why should they have to suffer because you want your Halo disk to last longer. Why not slower times because time is precious.

Sorry to say it but a hard drive is an external part of any machine. Just because it may or may not be "inside" the case doesn't matter. The hard drive is an external piece of memory for any machine, and the RAM is the internal piece of memory. Just because a hard drive can me connected to a USB port doesn't make it different than one connected by a SATA cable, it's just the type of connection, speed may be different but it doesn't change the fact that it is external.
