Divinity: Original Sin, a single-player and cooperative multiplayer fantasy role-playing video game by Larian Studios, is nearing its final release and has been confirmed as cross-compatible for Mac and Windows play. Mac gamers with a decently-specced computer can grab the beta right now through Steam Early Access.

A fresh post on the game’s official web site states, “Divinity: Original Sin is nearing release, and we’re unveiling details of the game's cross-compatible Mac version, a limited-supply Collector's Edition, and a massive update to the game's beta version on Steam Early Access.”

That’s right. Starting now, the game is available on Macs through your Steam Early Access code.

“Mac gamers often get the short end of the stick, but not so with Divinity: Original Sin,” the development studio continues. “Mac and PC gamers can play Original Sin together in co-op, and purchasing the game on Steam gives players the option of which version to download. The Mac version features full Retina support, improved Laptop Mode and is optimized to run on a wide range of systems.”

The beta version of Divinity: Original Sin (which you can buy via Steam Early Access) has also received a major update today.

Besides adding support for OS X computers, the game is also cross-playable, meaning Mac and PC gamers can play together. A new “Laptop Optimised” mode keeps the game running smoothly and adds Touchpad control support. Users can continue save-games from several devices because Steam Cloud saves are active.

The game’s AI can make use of potions and special arrows and adapts its tactics to players and environment, while the newly-added Pouches will allow you to easily organize items in your inventory.

Larian Studios has further revised the “abilities” to better support classless character builds, revamped the loot, added 10 extra talents and new skill FX, and improved quality of life, including inventory sorting, context-sensitive item menus, a dialog log, and action-point usage previews, among other things. More changes are also listed on the official Divinity: Original Sin web site.

The minimum requirements to play Divinity: Original Sin are OS X 10.8/10.9, 4GB of RAM, and Intel HD 3000 & 4000 graphics cards. Integrated chipsets like Intel Graphics will require 8GB of memory.

A recommended configuration is offered: “Intel Iris (Iris Pro) integrated chipset or NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M and higher video cards.” Larian says the game does support Retina displays, but it will only achieve good performance on MacBook Pros with discrete adapters.
