Dita, it seems, is a classy lady all the way to the tips of her fingers. And I'm nor being ironic - she is, in fact, one of the most opinionated entertainers around - even if she also likes to be discrete about it. But even so, she doesn't change her mind easily, and knows how to set boundaries so that she doesn't have to step over them further on. I must say - I was a bit surprised seeing her in the PETA aids, knowing that she can't possibly have taken up the whole of the organization's doctrine - but it looks like she may not have had to. After all, this is Dita von Teese we're talking about.
The burlesque dancer has just posed as a "naughty" teacher for PETA's new Animal Birth Control (ABC) campaign and yet she just revealed that working with the famously uptight animals rights group hasn't diminished her love for vintage fur. In fact, as some sort of statement in this respect, Dita wore fox fur at her performance for the Macy's Passport AIDS benefit last week.
She stated for people magazine that "PETA is totally aware of me wearing fur. I'm not working with PETA to tell people to be vegetarians or to stop wearing fur. I am there to strictly speak about spaying and neutering your pets". The animal rights group also insists in stating that they were well aware of Dita's love of all things vintage - fur included - before she signed the contract to appear in their advertisements.
PETA spokesman Michael McGraw wanted to clarify the situation: "Dita said she has some vintage furs she wears occasionally. PETA often works with a celebrity on an issue they feel comfortable supporting, whether it's supporting spaying and neutering, or speaking out against products that are tested on animals. So they may not be an animal rights activist, but their contribution to any of our campaigns is appreciated" He also added that while PETA hasn't insisted that Dita stop wearing fur yet, this subject could "possibly" be discussed at an undisclosed time in the future.
McGraw concluded: "We're happy to have her support on the issue of spaying and neutering. We will see where it goes". Nowhere, in my opinion. The day Dita steps out of her furs, it will be the end of an era. And none of us wants to get there. Really.
