Dita Von Teese’s style is held as a good example of how vintage elements can actually make a stronger impact than modern ones, if blended correctly. The burlesque dancer, who has, throughout the years, developed her own look based only on the things she liked most, is a fixture in the fashion industry so there was absolutely no way she could miss Paris Fashion Week, as JustJared can confirm.

Shortly before attending the Dior show, the dancer tweeted that she had prepared something truly special for the red carpet, the same e-zine says. The moment she got out of the car, photographers and bystanders saw exactly what she was talking about, as she unveiled an all-leather, black ensemble that looked like a dress but was, upon closer inspection, more like a complicated layering of several items.

Some fashion critics deemed Von Teese’s look a bit too on the risqué side to actually look good. What with the long leather gloves that went up to her elbows and the thigh-high leather boots and the skirt that opened at the front, there was too little femininity to her outfit, it is being said. On the other hand, as paradoxical as it may sound, she still looked very elegant and classy, like she always does every time she walks the red carpet. Her pitch black hair and bright red lips did not make the look harsher – quite the contrary, actually.

In an older interview, when it came to talking about her unique look, the kind that other female stars can only try to replicate, Dita Von Teese played it coyly, saying she only started dressing like that because she knew she had no other way to make herself stand out from the crowd. Because she could never be a model – she does not have the right measurements, for one – she decided to build for herself a persona that could steal the thunder by what she puts on. And so, Dita Von Teese was born.

“Part of the reason I style myself this way is because I never felt I could live up to what is typically shown to us as being [beautiful] in mainstream culture. I never felt like a natural beauty or that I could be pretty without make-up. No matter what I do, I’m never going to look like someone like Gisele Bundchen. No matter what! So I like creating a fantasy and using glamour,” Dita was saying, as we also reported at the time. So far, the fantasy has never disappointed, critics say, making of Dita a real fashion icon.
