Square Enix, the well known video game publisher, has announced that its new fighting game, Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy, which was initially shown at the Tokyo Games Show, will be launched on both North America and European markets in 2011, with the name staying the same.

Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy is a hybrid between a traditional fighting game, like Street Fighter IV or Marvel vs. Capcom, and a more role playing focused experience and Square Enix promises that both aspects will be enhanced in the new video game.

The unusual titles talks about a mythical 12th battle between Cosmos and Chaos, the conflict which will stand at the core of the narrative of the video game.

Both good and evil require allies to fight the new war and that means that a host characters will appear on each side, with the full cast of the first game, culled from a variety of Final Fantasy games, making an appearance.

Square Enix has also decided to add Lightning, the protagonist from Final Fantasy XIII, but also Tifa Lockhart and Kain Highwind.

Apparently more characters will be announced soon.

Square Enix also promises a new Assist Mode which allows a backup character to be selected in order to come into the fight in a manner similar to Marvel vs. Capcom.

Larry Sparks, who is the vice president of Brands for the PAL Regionof at Square Enix, stated when the announcement was made, “Fans demanded it, so we’re delighted to deliver, with a follow-up to the smash hit DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY. With more characters, missions, costumes and combat features, the world of DISSIDIA just got a whole lot bigger.”

Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy is a sign that Square Enix is trying to get on the recent revival bandwagon, which has powered the success of the new Street Fighter and will likely also help make the new Mortal Kombat a success.
