One of them works on USB 3.0, but the other only supports USB 2.0

Docking stations come in many forms and play various purposes. The ones that DisplayLink released a short time ago are the kind that act as a bridge or access point for portable/external storage devices and even displays.

DisplayLink launched the following two products separately, but they are almost identical in role, so we are going to look at them as a pair.

The differences between them, and the similarities, are actually quite easy to guess from a single glance at their names.

The company calls them the SuperSpeed USB3.0 engine and the universal USB 2.0 docking station.

Essentially, they are peripheral devices that can act as an intermediary between PCs and anything with an HDMI input, DVI/VGA ports, USB ports and audio connectors (mic/headphones).

"We are thrilled to include the new universal USB3.0 docking station on our accessories portfolio, which is an ideal match with our latest ultrabooks and notebooks," said Alvis Deng, product manager of Acer's commercial business unit.

"Mobility and hot-desking are key in the corporate arena. Providing users with the option to add two more displays adds even greater value to the offering."

The USB 3.0 dock has Gigabit Ethernet and 5.1-channel audio over HDMI as well, while the USB 2.0 dock settles for 10/100 Ethernet and lacks HDMI altogether.

"As the world's number two notebook brand, we are always on the lookout for fresh mobile solutions for business travelers," said Alvis Deng, product manager of Acer's commercial business unit.

"Our customers can enjoy the mobility, flexibility and cost saving advantages of hot desk set ups, as well as removing the cable clutter from their desks."

The image gallery shows both docks and the cables that they ship with. Unfortunately, DisplayLink chose not to specify the prices of either model. Thus, those interested will have to keep checking back with their local retailers.
