Disney Interactive Studios has announced that one of the most acclaimed video games of 2010, Split/Second, is now available for iPhone and iPod touch. The game has players building up their power meter through deft driving to trigger “power plays,” and more. Split/Second is also set to arrive at retail outlets for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PC.

According to the game’s official description, players don’t just race to the finish in Split/Second. Besides building up their power to trigger “power plays,” players also experience a hyper-competitive reality television show with city-sized sets rigged for destruction, Disney Interactive Studios explains. Developer Black Rock Studio was careful to add just enough power plays to each track. These can be strategically triggered, to achieve film-like explosive events for added dynamics, according to the game’s maker. Players can even alter the track and create entirely new routes, as they derail opponents and blow up stuff.

“With massive environments that players can dynamically change to take out opponents and alter the track, Split/Second redefines the action racing genre and provides a whole new level of fun for all video game fans,” Craig Relyea, senior vice president, global marketing, Disney Interactive Studios, said. “Black Rock Studio is among the world’s best game development studios and Split/Second is an incredible entry in their impressive portfolio.”

“When we were early in development on the concept, we expected racing fans throughout the world to be passionate about Split/Second but the feedback since we announced the game has far exceeded our expectations,” Nick Baynes, game director, Black Rock Studio, said. “We wanted to create something really fun that had never been done before in the racing genre and Split/Second accomplishes that.”

Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and older by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), Split/Second goes for $6.99 in the iTunes App Store, and requires an OS 3.0 device. Although Disney Interactive Studios doesn’t mention this in the press release, the game is also compatible with the iPad.
