Disney announces that its coming Infinity of toys and video games has been delayed from its original June launch date to the end of summer, in order to bring it closer to the crucial Christmas shopping season.

John Pleasants, the co-president of Disney, tells Polygon, “We could deliver in June if we wanted to. Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops.”

The Infinity concept relies on packs of toys that players will be able to buy and then connect to a virtual environment.

Disney Infinity is designed to compete with the very successful Skylanders franchise from publisher Activision, which is also set to get new toys this year.

Infinity can be played on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, the Nintendo Wii and the 3DS.
