The decision is probably based on the huge success of the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” franchise that made hundreds of millions of dollars in box office revenue for 20th Century Fox.

Disney has announced plans to develop a live-action/computer generated hybrid that is going to feature on the classic duo Chip and Dale. The Hollywood Reporter says that the film is going to be based on the “Rescue Rangers” adventure.

The movie was pitched by director Robert Rugan, who is known for his award-winning commercials, and who is also said to be working on the updated version of the animated characters. The producing company will be Mandeville Films, that's also responsible for the Muppets franchise.

The lovable chipmunk duo has first made its appearance in a 1943 animated short with Pluto and later went on to appear in 22 reels during the 50s. They got a complete overhaul in 1989, when they were portrayed as “Rescue Rangers,” a couple of detectives helping animal clients. This is the version that the movie will pick up from.
