Walt Disney Co. has announced that its cloud-based movie service will be expanding to include purchases made via Google Play, the Internet giant’s online store. This should help expand the reach of the online service offering movies that Hollywood studios have been trying to push.

“We are very excited to announce Google Play as our newest partner for Disney Movies Anywhere. We set out to create an exceptional Disney experience that made owning digital movies easy and fun, and with Google Play now on board following our successful launch in February, we are able to deliver unprecedented availability and ease for consumers across a broad range of mobile devices,” said Janice Marinelli, president, Disney Studio In-Home and Digital Distribution & Disney-ABC Content Distribution.

For its part, Google wants to make it easier for movie fans to enjoy all of their past and future digital purchases across all of their devices. The partnership with Disney gives Google Play users the ability to conveniently watch all of their Disney, Marvel and Pixar digital movies that have been purchased from any Disney Movies Anywhere participating retailer.

Two new movies available to celebrate the partnership between Disney and Google

If you’re not familiar with Disney Movies Anywhere, you should know that consumers can check out some 400 active digital titles from the aforementioned studios, preview upcoming offerings and enjoy free new and exclusive short-form content. They can also redeem Digital Copy codes found in Disney, Pixar, and Marvel BluRays and DVDs, or any Disney Movie Rewards points for digital purchases.

To celebrate the new partnership, Disney Movies Anywhere users who connect a new participating retailer account will receive a free digital copy of “Wreck-It Ralph,” the hit animated Disney flick.

The launch of the new business deal between Disney and Google also coincides with the release of “Maleficent,” one of the biggest hit movies of the year, which features Angelina Jolie in the main role, an actress that has taken on very few roles in recent years, as she focused on directing more.

“Planes: Fire & Rescue” is also out on digital and BluRay today, as well, so fans will now have one extra way to get a hold of them. This is, of course, good news, and it shows that some studios are really actually trying to serve the online community, the very same that others are pointing the fingers to and accusing of piracy.
