Network-attached storage devices are curious things, with hardware not unlike that of low-end PCs but emphasis on storage. A lot of storage.
The latest such product to grace the halls of man's technological repository is the DiskStation DS415+ from Synology.
Based on a quad-core Intel Atom CPU of 2.4 GHz frequency, the product can house up to four hard disk drive units of up to 6 TB each, for up to 24 TB in total.
The 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives can be arranged in one of several RAID modes, with varying levels of emphasis on capacity or security, or both.
The Atom 2.4 GHz quad-core CPU is backed by 2 GB of DDR3 by the way. It allows the data on one or all of the drives to easily be accessed by connected devices. And it's not just network-connected ones (dual-Gigabit LAN ports exist), but USB 3.0/2.0 and eSATA storage units as well.
Altogether, the Synology DiskStation DS415+ NAS should be able to attain 228 MB/s read and 233 MB/s write speeds, or even higher. And when encryption is used, rates should still be of 232 MB/s and 206 MB/s, respectively.
Synology didn't include a price in its press release, but it's not such a big deal considering that the HDDs will definitely cost a lot more anyway.
