It has a single bay and uses LAN and USB 3.0 connectors

NAS devices usually have more than one drive bay, because if you're only going to use one drive, you may as well just buy an external / portable HDD or SSD. But there are some applications where only LAN will do, so Synology has released a single-bay NAS drive.

Called DiskStation DS115, the newcomer can communicate with a PC at 111 MB/s read speed (or a bit more) and 104 MB/s writing speed.

According to the company, that's a 36% improvement over the performance of its predecessor.

The NAS runs the DiskStation Manager (DSM) 5.1 operating system (NAS devices are, after all, compact versions of desktop PCs) and can sync files between computers, phones, cloud storage accounts, etc.

Streaming is done easily enough as well, over DLNA, AirPlay, Chromecast or whatever other platform. Home surveillance can also be done. All the while, the NAS will use 5.44W during hibernation and 10.21W when active.

You can see just how many things the new Synology DiskStation DS115 can do that a mere external HDD can't.

You can still use those things though. In fact, the DS115 has a USB 3.0 port just so you can hook them up to it directly if you so wish.

"DS115 makes it easy to work, play, and share files from anywhere. With its speedy performance, intuitive interface, and diverse ecosystem of add-on packages, DS115 is a great NAS server for homes or small businesses - especially for people who still rely on external hard drives, flash drives, or cloud services to swap and share files," said Jonathan Wang, product manager at Synology Inc.
