Arkane will only show a small section of the game world

The new action and role-playing mix Dishonored is not even close to launch, but the team working on it is ready to think about the future of the game universe it has created and how it might be used in sequels and spin-offs.

Raf Colantonio, who is a co-creative director working on Dishonored, told VG247 during an event that, “The world is bigger than the game. Right now, we’re focussed entirely on the game, we’re not thinking of anything else. But it’s definitely an open universe. We’d be open to sequels and other things.”

It’s not clear whether the deal that new studio Arkane has with publisher Bethesda is for just one game or is linked to any product that is set in the Dishonored universe.

Harvey Smith, the other co-director, says that the team is aiming to revolutionize a number of mechanics and concepts for the action and the role-playing genres.

He added, “it’s not just the game mechanics, it’s the world itself. We really like the world it takes place in. It’s a difficult game to do because I think a lot of games are like a linear path with a trail of breadcrumbs left by the designer, but as soon as you as support multiple playstyles, multiple paths and multiple outcomes, it gets harder to develop.”

The developer suggested that even those players who take their time and explore the entire game space of Dishonored will feel like they have only experienced about 10 percent of what the actual universe has to offer.

The game will feature a world that combines magic and Steam based technology, and gamers will be able to choose the way they approach each challenge and how they develop their character.

Dishonored will be launched on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 at some unspecified date during 2012.
