The development team working on the upcoming first-person open-world video game Dishonored believes that giving players options when it comes to all gameplay situations is the best way to make them understand and take ownership of the consequences.

Harvey Smith, who is one of the co-founders of Arkane Studios, has told Sneaky Bastards that, “One could argue that the game is stronger with a pure focus on, but we find it more interesting when a range of options present themselves.”

He added, “To us, the most interesting games constantly present the player with inputs and outputs that work in as many general cases as possible: gradients related to movement, powers/weapons, morality, and enemy perception. So many things can happen in that environment that the end result feels like something the player authored.”

To give gamers an idea about the kind of experience that he aims to create with Dishonored Harvey Smith mentioned Far Cry 2, the Ubisoft published open-world shooter, as one of his favorite video games.

The developer believes that the amount of organic options that Far Cry 2 gave to the player was one of the keys to its success.

Dishonored will allow gamers to use straight up assaults, magic, stealth and other options when it comes to most gameplay challenges and expects each player to decide which is the gameplay style that best suits him.

The game puts gamers in the role of Corvo, who was one of the most trusted guards of the Queen of a world that mixes magic and technology.

Most of the Dishonored experience takes place in the city of Dunwall and sees Corvus trying to unveil a plot that affects the entire game world.

Dishonored is being published by Bethesda Softworks and will be launched on the PC, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the Xbox 360 from Microsoft during the fall of this year.
