Discovery has a new hit on its hands with its first-ever scripted miniseries, “Klondike,” about the 1896 gold rush, which premiered to much fanfare last night. Above is a trailer for it: the series stars “Game of Thrones” actor Richard Madden, aka the late King Rob Stark.

Speaking with The Today, the actor admits that he thought shooting in Canada’s Yukon region would be a breeze, especially after enduring rough weather on the set of the HBO series. Boy, was he in for a disappointment, just days into the production.

“I realized that ‘Game of Thrones’ was an absolute walk in the park. This was 100 times harder. At least in ‘Game of Thrones’ sometimes there was a tent to go back to with a heater in it,” Richard explains.

“[But in ‘Klondike’] you're up a mountain, you know, the tents would blow away. We didn't have anything... It was the most difficult thing I've ever had to do in my life,” he continues.

Adding to the total discomfort was the fact that he chose to sleep and live and work in the same clothes day in and day out because he wanted his character to be as realistic as possible. That and the fact that he chose to do his own stunts whenever he could.

Even if “Klondike” doesn’t make a killing in the ratings, at least Madden will always have the comforting thought that he’s the kind of actor who goes all out for a role, and that’s not something you see too much of these days.
