All owners will be upgraded to the Complete Edition

After over a year since it promised that an update to remove Games for Windows Live from Dirt 3 would arrive, Codemasters releases another statement saying that it's now in the final stages of replacing the Microsoft service with Steamworks and that, as a token of appreciation, all owners will be upgraded to the Complete Edition of Dirt 3.

Games for Windows Live has been highly criticized by many PC gamers for quite some time, yet despite all this, many developers and publishers still employed the problematic service in their titles. Now that the service is soon going to be shut down by Microsoft, many developers have started rolling out updates to remove GfWL and replace it with Steamworks.

The update is still coming, Codemasters promises

Among the studios forced to do this is Codemasters, as it promised back in 2013 that Dirt 3 would get Steamworks instead of GfWL in the future. Now, after over a year, the studio's representative confirms on the Steam forums that the patch is still coming.

The studio, of course, apologizes for the huge delay but it confirms that the patch is nearing completion and should appear soon.

"I know this is taking a long time and I can only apologize for the... well let's call it what it is, massive delay. I know it seems like I've not been coming by but I can assure you I have and I want to thank you for continuing to put the pressure on us both here and on Twitter to get it sorted," the studio says.

A free Complete Edition upgrade is coming

While it can't share a release date just yet, as different things may still cause a delay, Codemasters confirms that all existing owners will be upgraded to the Complete Edition of Dirt 3 for free. They'll also be able to receive Steam Trading Cards, and Mac owners should also find an upcoming version of the game specifically for their platform.

"I can however tell you that we'll be upgrading you all to the Complete Edition free of charge, we'll be adding Steam Trading cards and if you also happen to own a mac we'll be making the mac edition of Dirt 3 available to you as well. If you own a boxed copy dig out your CD key and keep it safe as you'll need that to redeem your Steamworks copy when the update goes live. Again, apologies about the delay but we're almost there," it adds.

As such, while the delay has certainly been a huge one, at least Codemasters is willing to make up for it in a way.
