Talk of a sequel to “Sin City” (2005) started to circulate even before the first film finished its run in theaters. As speculation had it that either Angelina Jolie or Salma Hayek had been contacted for a part, director Robert Rodriguez always kept mum on the subject – but he’s speaking now to ignite the rumors even more, according to IGN.

The famed director says that, while no timeline has yet been set and no other details discussed, a sequel to the 2005 groundbreaking film is happening, most certainly. Rodriguez tells IGN that the very reason why he incorporated no less than three storylines in the first film was because he thought it would not be successful and he wouldn’t have the time to show them to the world. Now that “Sin City” has proved successful beyond expectations, talk of a sequel is warranted, Rodriguez explains.

“People have been talking about Sin City 2 since the first one came out. Whenever I’m out and about, people say, ‘When’s Sin City 2 coming? When’s Sin City 2 coming?’ They’ve been asking that for years. So this probably will add to that, certainly.” Rodriguez says for the aforementioned publication. Nevertheless, as it happens, the director is not momentarily free to handle production of the sequel, as there are a couple of things he has to take care of first, before starting to work on “Sin City” – presumably, the “Predator” and “Machete” remakes.

“I actually had a phone call with some of the players in it today, but I was on a plane so I missed it. So next week we’re going to talk about it some more and get a timing on when we’d be doing it. But there’s a lot of people who are interested in it... We are definitely going to do that one.” Rodriguez further reveals, adding that saying that it will start shooting earlier next year is probably not far-fetched at this point.

As for what fans might expect from a sequel in terms of a plot, Rodriguez says such a project will finally allow him the freedom he yearned for with the first installment. “There’s a lot of stories. That was sort of the approach I took to it. That’s why there’s three stories in the [first] movie, because I thought, ‘I love this material, but gosh, what happens if it’s not successful and I don’t get to make a part two and part three. I still want to see “The Big Fat Kill” and “That Yellow Bastard.”’ So I wanted to put them all in one movie so I could at least get some of these stories out of my system. But there’s still so many books and so many stories to do.” Rodriguez concludes by saying.
