The public sector in the UK tries to make its services more efficient while cutting the need to reintroduce data. Paper has an expensive production cost and it's not environmental friendly. The organizations try to keep their archives in electronic format, while keeping information out of paper which is a big problem.
Some organizations in UK's public sector began to experiment with the use of digital pens. The Leeds City Council gave digital pens and paper to over 1300 employees, hoping to save over $2 million by 2008. The employees from the public sector in Greenwich are
testing this solution since April.
The digital pen is slightly bigger than a regular one, almost as big as a marker. When it is used on special paper, the pen's camera determines its position on the page. A device can store up to 40 pages of text.
The employees say they are happy because they don't need to use anymore a laptop or a PDA for their fieldwork, but only a mobile phone and digital pen and paper. This way, the personnel doesn't need to reenter the information because it is sent to a phone via Bluetooth.
