Tracking firms the NPD Group, Digi Capital and iResearch have announced that digital game sales, including both full titles and downloadable content, are increasing by one third each year on the North American and the European markets.

GamesIndustry cites data shown during the Game Developers Conference, which reveals how the percentage of digital sales on the rapidly expanding Chinese market is expected to grow at about 10 percent in the coming three years.

Liam Callahan, an analyst working with the NPD Group, says that 48% of the 14.8 billion dollars (11.5 billion Euro) linked to the video game industry during 2012 came from new video games that were bought in retail stores.

Digital sales are more important to the industry than mobile sales, the used game market, subscriptions, social network based experiences and rentals.
